A Guide to Buying or Renting an Adjustable Bed
Adjustable beds, also referred to as hospital or electric beds, are designed to help those with medical conditions gain a more comfortable night’s sleep. They are also designed to support those with mobility problems in getting in and out of bed.
A range of adjustable beds are on the market in the UK today, and modern beds can be quite ergonomic with efficient remote control.
One of the biggest ailments in the UK is back pain, with nearly half the UK population (49%) experiencing some form of back pain during their lives. An adjustable bed can make life so much more bearable for those who suffer from chronic back pain or a long-term medical condition that affects their mobility.
An electrically adjustable bed can be easily altered into a comfortable position to suit the sleeper’s needs. As mattresses can be molded to suit a particular body structure or disability need, they can prove to be a total enhancement in the life of someone with restricted mobility. An adjustable bed can be an aid to sitting comfortably to watch TV, read or eat for those who need to spend prolonged periods of time in bed.
There can be additional health benefits from mobility beds, such as easing swelling of the legs, relieving pressure sores, aiding with heartburn and digestive complaints.
Most adjustable beds are manufactured to standard sizes, although some companies will make more bespoke beds for those with very specific needs.
The standard sizes are:
• Single: 75cm x 200cm
• Standard Double: 135cm x 200cm
• Queen: 150cm x 200cm
• King size adjustable bed: 180cm x 200cm
• Super King size bed: 215cm x 200cm
As with any other mobility assistive product, we would recommend that you shop around before committing to purchase. There are a significant number of adjustable bed manufacturers and suppliers, so be sure to check what your requirements are and compare features, benefits and costs.
Many bed manufacturers offer a range of adjustable beds in addition to their standard bed range. In addition there are some more specialist mobility bed manufacturers such as Laybrook, Adjustamatic, Adjustable Beds World, Oakdale, Willowbrook and Abberley
