Aiding stroke recovery and reducing need for mobility scooters
Every day 1,000 people in Europe die from a stroke, but twice that number suffer a stroke and survive, suffering some form of mobility disability.
Dr Malcolm Macleod of the University of Edinburgh has been researching a new treatment that could drastically reduce the chances of stroke victims ending up disabled.
Many stroke victims lose some use of limbs, and end up being confined to a wheelchair or mobility scooter. This new process works by inducing a state of hypothermia, which reducing the patient’s need for oxygen, giving doctors more time to repair damaged tissues.
